My Experience with Cheating – Part One

In light of the latest cheating scandal in the chess world, I would like to present two games where I was faced with cheaters and I had to react in some unexpected ways in order to prevent them from robbing me.

The following game was played in 2009, times where nobody was really bothered by an occasional cheat in an open tournament. (After the tournament I tried to publish my game and the whole story in Europe Echecs, France’s biggest chess magazine, but they weren’t interested). I was facing a 2100-rated opponent in the last round and a win was giving me a good prize and a satisfying end to the tournament.

The leading engine at the time was Rybka, so the analysis was done with its aid. The comments are also from 2009 and they show how I saw the things right after the game finished and I returned to my hotel.
